The Year In Disney Hipster Blog: Part One

Taking a note from the Disney Hipster Podcast Playbook (yes, its a real thing...) this blog has always done a year end recap of some of our favorite posts and highlights from the previous year.  I always enjoy looking back at the year as a whole, and thinking "Gosh! I sure did a lot...) 2014 was an exciting year around here too, so lets get started.

   - One of my favorite posts from January was a Good Design Bad Design style look at the Ticket And Transportation Center.    I'm still super conflicted about this space...

   - We didn't make it too far into the year before reviewing a cocktail! Obviously.  Here is the yummy black cherry lemonade...

   - Clearly we wouldn't be Disney Hipsters without being a little negative this year too...in Six Things We Hate About Tomorrowland.

    - After years of putting it off I finally explored the Drinkwallah and lower garden at Disney's Animal Kingdom.

   - Our long running series Coverland continued with A World Of My Own.

   - In February not only did we release our Spinners! video...but we also announced the release date of Lets Move To Disney World.

   - In 2014 WE FINALLY WENT ON A DISNEY CRUISE! And here were our initial thoughts...

   - This year we celebrated Valentines Day with CULT FOOD VALENTINES!

   - If you only had four hours to spend in Epcot, what would you do?  We had to figure that our ourselves...

   - Our super talented friend Lauren produced these gorgeous Country Bear paintings.

   - Do you like fun lighting fixtures at Animal Kingdom Lodge? Yeah, us too.

   - Speaking of Animal Kingdom Lodge...we hosted an AMAZING themed party, including our favorite AKL foods.

   - We took an in depth look at meeting characters on a Disney Cruise!  I wish this had existed prior to our voyage on the Magic.

   - One of my absolute favorite posts from the year, we look at five interesting vegetarian quick service meals at Epcot.

-One mediocre meal after another...Lumieres on the Disney Magic was super blah.

   - Expanding upon my love tolerance of the Italy pavilion, I explore 6 things I DONT HATE about it.

   - We also finally explored one of my favorite stores! The Serka Zong Bazaar at Animal Kingdom!

   - One of the most popular posts of the year was a recap of our day on Castaway Cay!!! What a perfect experience we had...

   - Speaking of things that make me smile: Here are six photos from our May trip that make me incredibly happy...

   - A year long series chronicling some details at Disney's Hollywood Studios finally brought us to Gertie The Freaking Dinosaur!!!

   - We made a recipe video for our CULT FOOD OF THE YEAR: Tipsy Ducks In Love...

   - And we didn't neglect my favorite Adventureland snacks either...here is our review of the Adventureland egg roll cart.

   - Good Design / Bad Design lives on! This time with the Signs Of Adventureland.

   - We spend the Summer doing a "Shake To Randomize" series around World Showcase, and Norway was my favorite example.

   - Our favorite topic of all, restrooms at Walt Disney World, was explored. This time in the Importance Of Well Themed Restroom Signage.

   - My excessive cleaning was explored via a Magic Kingdom Playlist of music.

   - A lot of people ask us Why Disney Hipsters? and we explored this topic exhaustively back in June. I think this explains the whole thing pretty well.

   - Rounding out the first half of the year we examined the differences and similarities in the concept art of the Caravan Stage at Animal Kingdom.

Wow! Only half way through the year and I'm already exhausted.  I love these posts because it gives me a reason to reflect on all the cool stuff we did throughout the year.  Come back tomorrow for the rest of our blog highlights from 2014.  :)

Disney Sing Along Christmas Songs

If you were born in the 1980's and have a soul, you're probably obsessed with Disney Sing Along Songs.  If you aren't obsessed with them, then I don't think we can be friends anymore.  Regardless, here is the wonderful Christmas version of Sing Along Songs, featuring clips from some of the most amazing Disney Christmas shorts...set to REALLY BAD versions of Christmas songs.  It is neat to see them out of context without original audio.  Enjoy, and have a wonderful Christmas tomorrow.

Bwana Bobs The Little Kiosk That Could

There are few things that make me happier than Adventureland.  If you didn't already know of my love for this immersive land, then you probably don't visit this site too often.  I would be hard pressed to come up with a list of things that I don't absolutely adore here.  That doesn't mean I utilize everything this area has to offer, but I appreciate them none the less. Among these amenities that I don't ever use is the amazing Bwana Bobs.  Lets visit...

Bwana Bobs is located just beyond the Adventureland bridge, and fits in perfectly with the surroundings.  Those classic adventure theming tropes are found here...thatched roof, canvas, bad fake masks, and bamboo tied with rope.  This is textbook Adventureland.

Friday Quickie: Old Poly Photos

Today the walls come down in Disney's Polynesian Village revealing the new lobby layout.  Its clean, its vast, its...well...not really the same at all.  There are details that are indeed very cool, but I doubt the feel is the same at all. I will withhold any real commentary until I see it in person.   Meanwhile, enjoy some random pictures from The Poly of yore.

Restroom Signs On Discovery Island

There are a few restroom opportunities on Discovery Island at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Since this land acts as the hub of this enormous park these facilities can often be pretty crowded. However, there is a set going towards Dinoland USA that is never all that over run, and these are my preferred spot.
The bathrooms are themed much like the rest of Discovery Island.  Bright whimsical animal carvings adorn every possible surface...including the restrooms and their signs.

This spot is super unassuming, which is probably why it isn't very busy.  Plus the inside is relatively big.  Regardless of popularity the level of detail in the artwork is not overlooked.  I especially love these deer (antelope?) above the pay phone.

The actual signage does differ somewhat from the cravings found in the area, and are much more two dimensional.  I'm sure this is for clarity reasons...but I wish they were a little bit more consistent. These look like they should be at a preschool.

"Gourmet" Flavored Popcorn At Epcot

There are a few things that make Disney social media blow up.  Park expansion announcements, attraction closures, drunken fights between bloggers...all the usual suspects.  However, new horrible/amazing theme park food reigns supreme.  And this gourmet flavored popcorn at Epcot was, for a moment, the Kim Kardashian's ass of Disney social media.

This unassuming kiosk near the Imagination pavilion at Epcot debuted these flavored popcorns late this past Summer.  By mid morning of its debut accusations were flying wildly.  Everything from BEST SNACK EVER! NEW CULT FAVORITE! to THIS IS WHATS WRONG WITH THE DISNEY COMPANY! AGH! WHY CANT WE HAVE HORIZONS BACK!
I'm telling you, people are crazy when it comes to theme park snack options. I knew I needed to try these asap.  And in October thats exactly what I did.

High Octane Refreshments At Disney's Hollywood Studios

Amidst the Year Of Learning To Appreciate Hollywood Studios I decided that the best way to accomplish our goal (appreciating the studios...in any capacity.) I needed some booze.  DHS has never been a park I drink at.  To be honest, we're usually out of this park by 11:30 at the latest.  Yes, we do visit the Tune In Lounge at least once per trip, but that visit is strictly to appease Adam's milkshake addiction.
So, this past October I made a point of getting legit buzzed within the confines of my least favorite park, in an effort to widen my love of this vaguely themed park.  There are actually plenty of places to get a drink in the studios, but few actual bars.  Even the lovely Brown Derby with its fabulous drinks doesn't have a proper bar.   Among the few options is High Octane Refreshments.

This little hole in the wall bar is directly next to the crowd eating Studio Catering Company.  The theming is non existent, but does tie in with the scheme of the surrounding buildings, and doesn't stand out at all.  There is only a minuscule amount of high top stools if you actually want to cozy up to the bar, but there is plenty of tables in the area.  But honestly this isn't the kind of bar you want to spend significant time at.

Hey! I Revamped Our Youtube Page...

One thing that you can always count on concerning Disney Hipster Blog and the ridiculous Disney Hipster Podcast is that we will never run out of fun ideas to keep us motivated (and YOU interested...).  Just last week we released Christmas In Adventureland, which I am particularly proud of!  What a fun way to spend a Saturday night, right??!!
But some things are not quite as efficient.  The upkeep on this blog, which I consider the cornerstone of Disney Hipsters, and Twitter are pretty well maintained. However, some of our other social media outlets don't get nearly as much love.   Over the next couple of weeks Facebook, Tumblr, and Google+ (yes, still...) will all be getting facelifts.
In the meantime please go and enjoy OUR VERY PRETTY NEW YOUTUBE PAGE.

The page should be easier to navigate, and videos should be easier to locate in general.  Did you know you can create custom thumbnails on youtube??? So how out of the loop I am?

I'm super excited to bring some new life into Disney Hipsters. Even through the chaos of the holiday season I'm making this a priority, as I think it will make our readers experience more pleasant/more convenient.

Is there anything about our Youtube page that you would like to see us update?  What kind of videos would you like to see featured in the future?  Let us know over on Twitter...

Some Interesting Photopass Opportunities

Perhaps one of our sweet Cast Member friends can clear this up for us.  It seem like on certain trips Disney World has a huge flux of Photopass photographers.  They just seem to be everywhere...and not in the usual photo spots either.  Then on the next vacation things will be back to normal. Castle. Spaceship Earth. Blah. Blah.   We've always thought that maybe this was "photographer training season."  Is there any gravity to that assumption?
Anyway, this past trip of ours was one such busy photographer season.  PLUS in addition to that we also happened to get a few other special treats as well.

Animal Kingdom was absolutely lousy with Photopass Photographers!  If I see one in a different spot than usual I insist on stopping in our tracks to take a photo.  How could I resist one in my beloved New Harambe?!?!

Another special opportunity was Animal Kingdom's randomly extended hours!  There were a few nights on our trip where our favorite park was open until 8:00...and you know we had to stay until park closing.   Nighttime Pocahontas is everything to me.

Christmas In Adventureland

It's Christmastime hardcore around Disney Hipster Headquarters...and while normally this time of year usually leaves us overworked and exhausted, we we're feeling particularly festive.  Instead of waiting until Christmas day we decided to share our gift early...

Now don't you feel all warm and fuzzy inside?  Christmas in Adventureland will do that too you...and you're in luck! This original song is available on iTunes!  Happy Holidays to all of our listeners/readers/friends.  If you're new to DHB make sure to follow us on Twitter and Instagram.

Two Disney Christmas Music Loops...Because Its December

Yay! Thanksgiving is over! The end of this holiday signifies only one thing in my house...the ability to listen to Christmas music.  Adam strictly forbids Christmas tunes prior to Thanksgiving, along with our tree and decorations.  In a way the shorter time frame does make the season a little more special, but waiting for these next two loops can be at times unbearable.
I'm not 100% sure that these are the actual loops played in The Magic Kingdom or Epcot, but they sound familiar enough. Like most Disney background music loops these aren't that obtrusive, and truly act as background music for your day.  Unlike many traditional Christmas albums, these don't get terribly annoying after your first listen.  Enjoy.

Do you have any favorite Disney Christmas music?  Do you have a specific time frame that you let yourself enjoy them?  What about Disney specific decorations!?!?  Let us know/share pictures with us over on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
