Yay! A Meet Up!

So, come out and say hello and have a drink.  Um...we will probably have shirts and buttons. If anyone wants to lets us know ahead of time that they are coming that would be swell. Disneyhipsters@gmail.com  :)

Bad Design: Cruella's Meet and Greet Costume

Over the course of the last few years we have become legit character stalkers.  No, we don't visit character based sites (too often...) or go bat shit crazy when we see characters (too often...) but we do get pretty darn excited at the idea of meeting a more rare character.  The problem with this?  The more obscure characters often have HORRIBLE UGLY costumes! Ack.
This past year we went to our first Not So Scary party and had the best time ever.  In doing so we also had a chance to meet less common meet and greet characters.  Even the fab five were all done up in their Halloween get ups!  Problem is...they mostly kind of sucked, including this little lady:

Special Toby Tyler Book Illustrations

In 1960 Disney (along with Whitman books) published their adaptation of the James Otis children's novel Toby Tyler. The book was a tie in to the classic Disney live action film starring fan favorite Kevin Corcoran.  Though the film has grown over time to become part of the cannon of sentimental Americana this version of the book is all but forgotten.  The reason? It is stinking awful.
I've just finished reading the original James Otis book, published in 188.1 (I know, old right!!??) Otis's book is a charming reflection of the period that doesn't dumb anything down, despite the intended audience.  The mutual respect between the writer and reader keeps the story on track without missing any details along the way.  The Disney version? Um, apparently they think kids are dumb.
The one great thing that came out of this book, and all Disney books from this period, are the fantastic illustrations!  All done up in red and black ink, these lithograph prints are always easy to "read." Nothing confusing about the story that they are trying to tell.   The cover is equally amazing....look how tiny Mr. Stubbs is!

The phenomenal cover...

Disney Blog Roundup: 7/28/12

We are back from our mini trip to (wonderful?) north Florida to visit family.  Nice, relaxing, and very boring.  I just ate a dosa for dinner, and now my mouth is on fire. wonderful.

- Sarah at Eating WDW takes a stab at another Japanese snack which I've never tried! Looks interesting!

- Main Street Gazette puts the term "the more things change, the more they stay the same" into perspective via Disney World.

- OH MY GOODNESS. Melissa Sue at Mouse On The Mind got the greatest thing in the world ever. I really need this in my life.

- Maybe the best series ever: Endearing and Underrated via This Happy Place Blog this time with Mulan! A movie that has definitely grown on me...

- More vintage park costumes via Gorillas Dont Blog!!! Love this series! :)

Animal Kingdom Artifact: Room Art.

Here are a few shots of the artwork that you can expect in rooms at Animal Kingdom Lodge.  We've only stayed at the DVC villas (both Jambo and Kidani) but we assume these are found in regular rooms as well... Anybody want to confirm this?  Anyway, they make me smile in a ridiculous way. :)

Creepy/Amazing Three Caballeros Fan Art...

I'm endlessly infatuated with The Three Caballeros in all capacities.  Randomly on Tumblr some terrific and creepy fan art will pop up to add to the collective lexicon of the Caballero universe.  What is creepy about these?  I think its the fact that anthropomorphized animals are reverted back to human forms....weird, just weird.
Most of these are from deviantart.com and I didn't make any of them myself.

A Few Treasures From Space Farms

Adam and I recently had the pleasure of visiting Space Farms in the secluded woods of New Jersey.  This terrific place is a combination museum and zoo.....What?!?! Yes, friend, two great things in one.  Space Farms has been in operation since the 1920's...and they have a wonderful melange of antiques.
My mind drifts automatically to what disney stuff do they have??  Well, there was indeed a few things in the "doll room."

Wonderful Jiminy Cricket from the 1940's.

The weirdest/ugliest collection of dolls...why is minnie's body like that!!??

Public Service Announcement.

I realize that flash photography has been a problem on Disney dark rides for as long as the parks have been open, but honestly, I think its gotten worse in the last few years.  Nothing sends my blood pressure soaring quicker than this inappropriate and obnoxious act...

If you are nice to me, you'll ignore my moustache...as we are still in the blue sky era of that. ;)

Melody Time Sheet Music

After a long day at work this past Saturday, I was happy to come home to this special treat!  Adam bought sheet music for the song Blue Shadows On The Trail from the 1948 package film Melody Time!  Performed here by Roy Rogers, a close friend of Walt, in an incredibly effective and eery way.  I have always loved the artwork for old Disney sheet music, so graphic and bold. Love it.

In Defense of WDW: Take A Chill Pill

Summertime around our house can be a gloomy time.  We DO NOT visit Disney parks during this busy time, thus creating the longest period of time between trips. We've made it through these lean months every year so far, but something about this upcoming October trip to Disney World has us both stricken with new zeal and anxiety.
It is normal for us to act like crazy little kids on Christmas Eve in the few months leading up to an extended WDW vacation, but this one is particularly menacing! This reason? Disneyland did it.  In the long winded anticipation of our first Disneyland trip we managed to get all caught up in the hype of Disneyland. (which we absolutely love SO MUCH in a totally different way.)  Walt Disney World, the amazing Project Future, though technically more popularly attended is often times regarded as an evil step sister of Disneyland.  But Disney World is something that Disneyland was never meant to be, relaxing.

Ugly castle, but at least I'm not having a panic attack...

Animal Kingdom Artifact: Thornwood Carvings

Located in our beloved Sunset Overlook in the main building at Jambo house, these wonderful thornwood carvings are from the Yoruba people of Nigeria.  And what charming little carvings they are, right?

I can't wait to grab a cocktail to enjoy while relaxing in the Sunset Overlook, one of my absolute favorite places on WDW property.  :)

Design Lesson: Tune-In Lounge

One of the best places to grab a drink or quick lunch at Disney Hollywood Studios is the wonderful Tune-In Lounge located in the 50's Prime Time Cafe.  While used primarily as the waiting room/check in area of the main restaurant, I'd venture to say that I actually prefer this spot over the actual table service.
This wonderland of kitschy delight is full of winks and nods toward a simpler time.  Though it is somewhat exaggerated, some might argue that this is an accurate depiction of a 1950's living room.  If this is the case, I'll take it!

This is indeed a bar, not your grandmothers living room...

Disney Hipster Covers: One Little Spark.

As you may or may not know that the Disney Hipster both fancy themselves musicians...be it very different musicians. Although we share alot in common, musical taste and output is not one of them. We thought it might be fun to start doing Disney Covers (Parks or Movies) in our own distinct styles and then make them available for free download or steaming over on our new Soundcloud account.

more after the jump...

Sunday Quickie: Late Night Teacups.

From our trip in September...first night at the Magic Kingdom, getting our Extra Magic Hours on.  :)

Disney Blog Roundup: 7/7/12

Hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July week...I know that we did. (aka, we did nothing, and relaxed...)  I'm practically pulling my hair out wanting to go down to WDW so bad.  October will be here soon enough.  To get yourself through the weekend, enjoy these amazing blog posts...

   - Heck yeah! Eating WDW must have been reading our minds. We can't wait for Tutto Gusto! Luckily, Sarah has been there a few times...

   - Ryan at Main Street Gazette takes a good look at the now defunct Characters In Flight Balloon...

   - We've never been more honored than being mentioned in Estelle's video celebrating her one year anniversary of the amazing This Happy Place Blog.  We're so lucky to have such an awesome friend...

   - Melissa Sue at Mouse On The Mind takes a peek at a lovely Jiminy Cricket garbage can at the Boardwalk...

   - In perhaps the best evidence ever, Tom Bricker at Touring Plans explains why Impressions De France Is Better Than Soarin...

Animal Kingdom Artifact: Three Bathroom Tiles

Today in our Animal Kingdom Artifact series, we bring you three tiles from the Jambo House rest rooms.  I'm not exactly sure if these are in ALL AKL rest rooms, but I don't think they are.  These are specifically located at what is technically the Boma facilities...though it can be enjoyed by all.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks: Opening Titles

You can tell a lot about a movie and the people who made it based on the opening titles. If the movie is great, and the people care about it odds are the same care and affection will be given to every aspect, including the opening sequence.   The subtle art of these titles has been lost throughout the decades, in favor of the titles playing over the action.
One of my favorite opening sequences is from the 1971 Disney film Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Totally under rated in every aspect. (indeed, I want miss Price to be my mother...) The opening was inspired by the medieval Bayeux tapestry and like said tapestry the sequence tells a story.  The illustrations in this are just lovely, and who ever was responsible did a bang up job.  What happened to the days where people were actually proud of the work they did?

An Afternoon at Bugs Land...

Happy 4th Of July everyone.  While we really considered a post along the lines of "Favorite Patriotic Things To Make Fun Of," we figured we would be sweet today instead.
As we've  mentioned we love Disney California Adventure... especially A Bugs Land.  Beyond the fact that the theming is phenomenal, the attractions are downright amusing...
Here is a video montage of some of our time spent in A Bug's Land this past May.

I hope everyone is having a terrific holiday.  Go drink some margaritas and drunk dial people, like a good American.  :)

Speaking of Random Disney Ukulele Connections...

This wasn't planned, but the weirdest coincidence ever.  Adam and I were in the middle of watching Bedknobs and Broomsticks, researching blog posts.  I was also in the middle of researching Cliff Edwards for today's other blog post.  In doing so, I was reading about OTHER ukulele legends, one of which caught my eye.
Tessie O'Shea seamed fun and brazen and amazing. Turns out she was.  Why is this as random as I mentioned?  BECAUSE SHE IS IN BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS...

Her full scene doesn't seem to be on youtube, but she is seen here at the beginning.  What a wonderful old broad, right?  so random...

Tessie doing her thing.  wow. I need all of her records right now.  Above she is playing a banjo/ukulele.

The Real Jiminy Cricket: Cliff Edwards

Anyone who buys Disney music regularly on iTunes inevitably comes across Ukulele Ike Sings Again.  For some reason or another I never paid this record any attention, ignoring it plainly as another random wishy-washy Disney release.  It wasn't until I was recently gallivanting across Youtube watching vaudeville stars that I really delved into the wonderful world of Ukulele Ike.

Getting To Know Norway...

One of the joys of being a devoted Disney parks fan is investigating the subtle and extensive lengths in which the Imagineers will go to immerse you in a story.  Epcot is particularly ripe with fanciful, adventurous, exhausting themes.
Unlike most of Disney World, Epcot's World Showcase is NOT based in fiction but real life places.  I haven't had the good fortune of visiting any of the countries represented (a little sheltered, yes.) but am very curious as to how these wonderful pavilions held up against reality.  So, enter the children's library...

Look Ma! I can read!

Sunday Quickie: Enjoying Food With Heimlich.

The surprise hit of our recent Disneyland trip was Heimlich's Chew Chew Train in the Bugs Land area of California Adventure.  Here are a few shots of some food that you get to enjoy with Heimlich along the way...
