Magic Kingdom Mermaid.

I am absolutely in love with this mermaid drawing located just outside the upstairs mens room at Columbia Harbor House.  It goes down as one of my favorite pieces of themeing in the park.  Just amazing.

My Mad Muppet Skills.

With all the amazing and deserved Muppet hoopla going on right now, I thought I'd contribute a little bit myself.  Here are some very accurate, precise, clearly very professional drawings of the Muppets I did last night.   I used the highest quality crayons and sharpie markers...

A Few Disney "Whats My Lines."

I love to watch old clips from Whats My Line...mostly for the celebrity guest.  We get double points if the celebrity has a Disney tie in!  Here are a few of my favorites!

Come on Hayley!  You can do better than that!!!!

Tour of Adventureland.

We have our differences of opinion when it comes to favorites.  I prefer the BROWNIE sundae at Storybook Treats, Adam prefers the COOKIE sundae.  I love Blizzard Beach, Adam loves Typhoon Lagoon.   That is not to say that I don't like cookie sundaes and Typhoon Lagoon...what am I crazy?!?!
One thing that we have always agreed on? Adventureland is by far our favorite land in the Magic Kingdom.  Like no other land, it is fully immersive.  The trees are well settled, the buildings look ancient, and the music is...well...totally friggin awesome.
Here is a silly tour of Adventureland that I made several months ago, just for fun.

Before anyone asks the song is a remix of Mind Drips by Neon Indian.  I know its not the usual Disney Hipsters style...but I thought you would enjoy it all the same.
What is your favorite land at the Magic Kingdom?

Top 10 Under Rated Things at Disney World

The big reason we started the Disney Hipster blog was we found ourselves disagreeing with the majority of the hosts/writers of most of the popular Disney podcasts and blogs (except for the wonderful folks behind the Imagineering Disney blog who are always spot on). It seems like someone is constantly hating on an attraction we love or just never mentioning a must have snack.

Since starting the blog we've meet lots of wonderful people, and found many people who also share our loves and others who do not. Its a diverse community that gets along so well despite its differences, but I think thats what makes its so wonderful. Even though you might not agree that Pocahontas is the worst animated classic, we love you anyway.

Most of the time we just find out that people don't get to spend as much time in the parks as we have  for one reason or another. We also considered that maybe people just haven't looked closely enough at these things or just never noticed them at all. Either way, next time you take a journey to the World, slow down take a closer look at what we consider to be the Top 10 underrated things at Disney World.

I Want Miss Price To Be My Mother...

In the pantheon of bad ass Disney ladies there are a few front runners.  Cruella De Ville, any Annette character,  any Hayley character,  Dorothy McGuire, and the highly over rated Mary Poppins. (this doesn't even touch on the princesses...)   But there is ONE lady, out of all Disney ladies that I would most like to be related to.  For the sake of this, lets say she is my mom or crazy aunt.   Eglantine Price.

Top Five Disney Turkeys!

I cannot overstate how much we despise the idea of eating a turkey.  Neither one of us has eaten meat since we were 12...however in the horrible spirit of Thanksgiving, here are my top five Disney Turkeys.

   Number Five: Turkey Leg Shirt.

There is nothing more repulsive than walking around Disney World in the hot sun eating a turkey leg.  Yes, I know I just offended about half of our readers.  But really?  It's Disney World!  There are millions of other things to eat.  With that said, I think the above shirt is pretty funny, and I like the design.

Disney Hipster Milestone: 100th Post.

The last couple of months writing this blog has been really fantastic.  It helped ease the transition from Staten Island to Montclair, NJ....and given me a fun hobby to fill my time!  I want to say THANK YOU to anyone who reads it on a regular basis...though I would probably still be writing it...the fact that I know people are paying attention feels really great.
Here are my top ten favorite things we have done:

#10:  Little April Showers:

Making A Disney Thanksgiving Dinner!

I look forward to reading the Thanksgiving dinner offerings at Disney World every year.  Sure, I don't eat turkey...but I really love all the delicious stuff that comes with Thanksgiving!  Though I've never been to Disney World for the special day, I've always wanted to stuff my face full of mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce at my favorite place in the world.
So, I've sifted through an extensive list of Disney Thanksgiving menus from, and come up with my DREAM THANKSGIVING DINNER:

Coverland: The Second Star To The Right.

I have a crazy soft spot for the 1953 animated classic, Peter Pan.  It is arguably my favorite, right up there with Alice, and Lady and the Tramp.  Though this film has far fewer songs than most, the songs it does have are very special.  Case in point, The Second Star To The Right.   This amazing song has entered the lexicon of "Disney theme songs" right up there with When You Wish Upon A Star.
Clearly this song is amazing, and here are a few wonderful/cool/nuts covers of it:

Doris Day, doing her thing.  I'd never heard this, and I kinda love it.

Baby's First Beverly.

Adam and I love Club Cool.  Stopping in for a refreshing (and free)sugary beverage is often one of the first things that we do on a Disney trip, just after Spaceship Earth.
Club Cool has a selection of eight different soft drinks from around the world, presented by Coca Cola.  Kinley and Krest are my favorites, while Adam prefers the watermelon one from China.

Disney Blog Roundup: 11/20/11

I hope everyone is geared up for Thanksgiving...I know I am.  Caramelized brussel sprouts?  yes please.   Here are a few of our favorite posts from this week:

   - Over at Studios Central, Aaron takes a stab at the top five holiday events at Walt Disney World. I like the holidays around the world myself.

   - A charming look at what mickey reads comes to us from Imaginerding.  Go take a look at the books Mickey stocks in his library!

   - Our perennial favorite Imagineering Disney does another great Then And Now... this time at Disneyland! Just wonderful.

   - The Ink and Paint Club take a very in depth look at the development of Mickeys Christmas Carol.

Sunday Quickie: A Few Random Characters at Epcot.

September must be the elusive and mysterious character training time at Disney World.  We bumped into these rascals in WORLD SHOWCASE.  Really Epcot?

Andrew's Top Five WDW Music Loops:

People often wonder why we, as adults, become so obsessed with Disney World that we not only visit four times a year, but also write a stinkin blog about it.  I've said it before, and will likely say it again. It's not about attractions, its about atmosphere.  I love the feeling I get when I'm at Disney it in Future World at Epcot, or Main Street USA at the Magic Kingdom.  (hell, I even love being on the bus at Disney World!)
I think the undisputed king of setting the stage is back ground music, or BGM.  Without the amazing music seamlessly carrying us from one area to another, the parks could be rather creepy.  Imagine Adventureland with NO TIKI shiver with fear.
Here my friends are my (andrew's) Top Five Exterior Music Loops.  (adam promises to do his top five in short order.

Number Five:  The Land Exterior Loop

I include this loop despite of (or because of?) it being very, very dated.  The bad synths SCREAM early Epcot.  If there was one park that had BGM that thrived, it was early Epcot.

Weird Tomorrowland Terrace Art.

Sometimes the choices made at Walt Disney World can really baffle us.  The conversion of Alien Encounter into the far less appealing Stiches Great Escape? More than  ten years of Under New Management?  AVATAR?!?!?!
All of these decisions baffle me FAR LESS than the following three photographs taken in Tomorrowland.  Observe:

Photo Walkthrough: Stave Church

If you haven't already figured it out, we are in love with the Norway Pavilion.

We've only been completely disney obsessed for just about 4 years, so the parks have remained fairly static and we've grown quite attached to them. Listening to the folks that have been visiting disney parks longer than we have, they constantly pine for those long gone attractions such as Horizons or Journey into Imagination.  That makes me realize that the parks have become habitual for us but they will change. With the recent rumors of the impending doom of the Norway Pavilion, I've been really considering life without Kringla, Malestrom and the current exterior and it makes me really sad. As a result I figured I should document the little things that aren't thoroughly photographed for a future without them or for those guests that live to far to have seen them in person.

I present a photo walkthrough of the Stave Church after the jump....

Animal Kingdom Artifact: 07

Located in the Animal Kingdom Lodge library, we have this bad ass handmade pistol.  This is just one of many rad artifacts located in the library...check it out next time you're over at the lodge.

Great Photo App for Disney World...

It's no great secret that we take liberal advantage of photo filter apps on this blog.  This is the Disney Hipster Blog after all, and what is more hipster than fake old timey photos?  Maybe mustaches, but that's beside the point I'm trying to make.
On this recent trip I had a lot of fun playing around with Incredibooth, which is a new photo booth app from the makers of our favorite Hipstamatic.  One of the great "add ons" for Incredibooth  is the House of Haunts filter...which will scramble up the photo strip.  This makes for GREAT Disney World photos!  Below are some cool examples from our last trip:

A Few Random Songs On Mainstreet.

Earlier this Summer we talked extensively about the music played on Mainstreet U.S.A.  There are songs from Oklahoma! and (my favorite) Summer Magic.  Today we are delving a little further in to Main Street music.
Probably the most recognizable of main street music, The Wells Fargo Wagon  song from the 1962 movie musical The Music Man.   This one just screams main street (obviously) and I think the back ground music of the area would suffer without it.

Some of the more useful Disney related blog posts this week.  I hope everyone had a super / awesome/ amazing week...and that we all took the time to learn something new.  Lots of fun stuff in store for Disney Hipster Blog next week!

-Our favorite Disney website for park updates Laughing Place, has great coverage of the new holiday castle show!  Love this!

   - Good ol Disney Parks Blog brings us this charming video of Will Gay creating a hand painted vinylmation.  Terrific job Will!

  - Bringing a first timer to the parks soon?  Try the 10 Tips For Newbies  via Zannaland!

   - Chelle over at This Happy Place takes a closer look at the partners statue.  While Stelle reviews a documentary about Marceline!  Great job as always ladies!

Solo Touring With Andrew...

As most of you know, I was freaking out about being in the parks by myself.  Though aspects were pretty scary, and sometimes lonely, it turns out that solo touring can be really stinkin fun.  Here is a video I mad with a few tips:

I just realized, yes just now, that I look like a server at Bennigans.  Oh well, that's life.   Do you have any solo touring tips?  Any good stories?  Let us know via twitter!  @disneyhipsters

Boma: The Good, Bad, and Ugly.

We have always wanted to eat at Boma.  It has been on the back of our mind since we started staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge several years ago.  There is something enticing about the open atmosphere of the restaurant, right below the main lobby of Jambo House and the Victoria Falls lounge.   We have also heard great things from several vegetarian friends gushing over the Why hadn't we eaten there up until this last recent trip?

Animal Kingdom Lodge: Sunset Overlook

We recently took some time out of our marathon three day trip to visit our beloved Animal Kingdom Lodge for dinner at Boma.  While there I insisted on taking "a few" photos for our Animal Kingdom Artifact series.
Tucked in the back left hand corner of Jambo house is the Sunset Overlook. This overlook is a mysterious little room that neither of us had ever ventured into, as it feels kind of off limits.   Little did we know that it is actually open to guests...and totally worth the visit next time you're at the resort.

Adam's Birthday.

I'm sure most of you have surmised that I (Andrew) write the vast majority of this blog, with a few interjections from Mr. Adam.  He also takes a great number of the photos that we use. Anyway, I'd like to say a very happy birthday to my best friend and husband. Without Adam I would never have discovered my love for Disney...and I would have been a much more cynical/ sarcastic/ brooding jagweed.
Here are a few of his Disney related gifts this year...

The Contemporary (good stuff.)

Alright....I'm an equal opportunity hater.  With that said, I do have a few nice things to say about The Contemporary Resort.  This can be summed up in a shorter, less ranty post.
Number one most amazing thing about staying at The Contemporary?  The picture below is the view from our room.

The Contemporary (Bad Stuff.)

One of the most exciting aspects of our recent trip to Disney World was the fact that we would be staying at The Contemporary Resort.  Though it was never at the top of our "resort wish list," we did always fancy the idea of staying there at least once.  Since Adam had the opportunity to  attend a conference at this delux resort, we thought "why the hell not."

I think everyone dreams of staying here sometimes...

Disney Blog Roundup: 11/06/11

It's been another fabulous week at Disney Hipster Headquarters....lots of fun blog posts in the works, and I'm working on a few new songs/projects also.  There is a pretty good chance I'm writing a song about Living With Land.   Here are some disney blog posts I enjoyed this week:

-The Epcot Explorer's Guide catches Imagineering in a lie.   Very interesting indeed.   And while we are at it,  they also have a great theory on why Epcot's hours have been extended.
   - I never get sick of reading about the Western River Expedition!  It's never too late to build it!  Via WDW Facts!

   - A terrific look at the penguins from Muppetvision 3D, brought to us by Main Street Gazette.

   - Progress City U.S.A, one of my absolute favorite blogs brings us the wonderful Fashion Show At Lunch! Fashion Show At Lunch!

   - Imagineering Disney  has a great photo collection of DCA's Buena Vista Street model.

-Our friends Moved By The Mouse continue their DATE NIGHT series with our favorite, Alice In Wonderland.

Saturday Quickie: Not So Scary.

So I guess the real trip updates might have to wait until Monday.  We both had to jump right back into work, and haven't had any time to compress. (or digest our schoolbreads for that matter.)  So I promise, next week will be full of Disney Hipster goodness...

In the mean time, enjoy these few pictures from my first Mickeys Not So Scary Halloween Party...

A Few Thoughts On This Random Trip...

We are back home after this random and super short trip to Walt Disney World....the circumstances of which you can read about here.  Long story made short, a small Disney trip is just as magical and wonderful as a long 11 night trip.   Here is a short wrap up, day by day, of what we did.

Sunday:  Checked into the Contemporary around 6:30, just in time for Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party! Stayed at the party until midnight.

I'm an owl. Adam is a squirrel without a tail.
