Sunday Quickie: Artists Point Anniversary.

Here are a couple shots from a recent Artists Point dinner.  This was on our ACTUAL anniversary, as opposed to our perpetual "Disney Button" anniversary.   I'm making a sad face because our amazing free dessert has disappeared into my belly.

Disney Blog Roundup: 10/29/11

If all goes well...which it probably will not...Adam and I will be in  Disney World late tonight for our SUPER DUPER AWESOME BUT SHORT TRIP.   I'm excited to cram all of WDW into three days.  Also, Sunday we will be celebrating my birthday at the Magic Kingdom for Not So Scary...yay!  I've never been at Disney World on my

Animal Kingdom Artifact: 06

Today I'm going to break away from the norm of this segment.  Here are just a few random shots from around the resort.   My favorite thing in the world is wandering around Animal Kingdom Lodge, just admiring the atmosphere.   I could easily spend a whole vacation not leaving the grounds of this resort.

Haunted Mansion Mystery

In spirit of the upcoming holiday I thought I would share a quick Haunted Mansion memory. The Mansion is the only attraction I remember from my one trip to Disneyland as a kid. Its also the first attraction that Andrew and I obsessed over during our early Disney World trips. As you can imagine, I've been on it at least 200 times since my first trip in 2002. On every ride through, I love to look really hard for the little details I haven't seen before (and not like that stupid 'Hidden Mickey'...Boooooo). Its still amazing to me that I could draw the track layout and main scene details from memory, yet every time we ride it, I notice something new.

Nervous About A Disney Trip?

Someone, please, diagnose me.  For some strange, inexplicable reason, I'm nervous about this upcoming WDW trip.  I'm a Disneyworld pro.  I know every inch of all four parks, scoff at park maps, and can at the drop of a hat recite counter service menus.  So whats eating me up inside?  A few scenarios...

   Reason Number One: Short Notice.
Half the fun of going to WDW is PLANNING your trip.  We usually know a good four months in advance of our trip.  We would slowly tick away at the calendar, make our ADRs as the day came up, and fine tune our trip down to the minute.

An example of our normal planning...

Coverland: Lavender Blue.

The below clip is absolutely dripping with charm.  It features a young(ish) Burl Ives in the fantastic Disney classic So Dear To My Heart.  Ives was in fact nominated for an Academy Award for his rendition of this folk song.

A Couple Shots From Dino-Land, USA:

I've got Dino-Land USA on the brain this morning...maybe its because I get to ride Primeval Whirl for the first time in almost a year next week!  Yay!  I love Primeval Whirl, as does Adam.  Here are a few shots from Dino-Land...

Random Photopass Locations...

Adam and I have been using Photopass for a few years now.  After looking back at hundreds of photos of one of us, or the other, we wanted some pictures of us TOGETHER.  So we started using photopass.
The thing about photopass is that they are often times in the same boring spots in each park.  Yes, I love having my picture taken in front of Cinderella castle...but after the 20th time?  Not so much.

cold and boring: December 2010.

Sonny Surprise...

Trying to explain why we like Vinylmation and do not like pin trading is very difficult.  So much so, that I'm not even going attempt such a feat on a blog.  If you want to hear my opinion on pin trading, meet me for a drink and I'll let it rip.  (sorry, Moved By The Mouse!)
But for some strange reason, I've started buying and trading Vinylmation.  I'm not a completionist by any fact there are very few Vinylmations that I actually want.  Most of them are poorly designed and pointless.  The ones I enjoy are mostly characters from movies or park references.

Lots and lots of bad design.

Andy's First Trip...

I was born in California and lived there until I was eight years old.  My family didn't go to Disneyland all the time, but I did get to go a few times as a child.  Though I've been back to the west coast a few times since, I haven't been back to Disneyland.  (Adam and I are planning a trip in the spring!!!!!!!)
Here are a few photos from what I believe is my FIRST TRIP to Disneyland...

Thats me...falling out of the stroller, and my mom, with her bad eighties hair...

Animal Kingdom Artifact: 05

At Animal Kingdom Lodge, its all about details.  I hadn't noticed this wonderful light fixture until my fifth stay at AKL.  Located just before going out to the pool area from the main building...look up.  Reminiscent of ostrich eggs, this is one of the better light fixtures.
Light fixtures?  Really Andrew?  If you are an extensive theming fan, like me, you already understand.

I got the above view by going to the Victoria Falls level....there is a wonderful little sitting nook there.

Animation Appreciation, The Skeleton Dance.

The Silly Symphonies that Walt made starting in 1929 were part of an answer to a somewhat large problem.  "Gag cartoons' such as those staring Mickey Mouse and friends were funny, cute, and somewhat forgetable.  There was very little finesse in the gangs mischief. (this clearly would change, in short order)   The Silly Symphonies were to be more complex than that.  Yes, there would still be gags...even redundant ones.  But the scale and artistry would be much more grand.
The first, and most culturally significant of these wonderful cartoons, it The Skeleton Dance.

Spooky graveyard to set the scene?  For sure.

Lets Take A Tour of Fabulous Norway...

The Norway pavilion at Epcot's world showcase is my favorite, in the whole world.  Not my favorite place in Disney World, my favorite place in the WHOLE WORLD.   So I decided to write a silly song about it, and edit it into a video.  Enjoy.

This is just the first of a series of songs I think....maybe a whole record of songs about world showcase???  I'm thinking about it.  :)

Fun Traditions, Garden View Tea Lounge.

As mentioned previously, Adam and I have our favorite Disney food haunts.  One of the most endearing and sentimental is afternoon tea over at The Grand Floridian.
Both avid tea drinkers at the time, we wanted to extend our love of caffeine into our vacation time. (not to mention our love of food...) We made a reservation for The Garden View Tea Lounge on our second trip to Disney World and have been going ever since.

In lieu of my reluctance...

This might come as a shock to you, but I had to be dragged to Disney World the first time I went as an adult.  Adam and his sister had been going together for years, and now it was my turn.  I was entirely unenthusiastic about the whole thing...then I got there.  From the moment I first stepped onto Mainstreet, till the moment we left five days later, I smiled.
As a sarcastic, ironic, artist/hipster/whatever 22 year old, getting me to smile was a big deal.  I can think of nothing that has made me smile as much as Walt Disney World, or the Disney company in general. (Unless you count the guy that introduced me to WDW....clearly)   The below picture was taken a few years after that fateful first trip...after spending 15 hours in the Magic Kingdom and visiting 55 attractions in ONE DAY...Adam and I rode the Astro Orbiter during Wishes.   This is the happiest I've ever been, you can see it on my face.

The happiest moment, of the happiest day of my life.

As a young man, I am often challenged as to why I love WDW.  The short, most accurate answer is:  It makes me a better and happier person.  When I'm there all sarcasm, irony, bad spirit goes out the window, and I act like a big kid.

A Little Donald Love.

In the land of character stalking, you quickly become familiar with "The Regulars."  These are the characters that you can see in the same spot, virtually everyday, year after year.  I get very upset when I see Buzz Lightyear over by Astroblasters.  Can't there be a meet and greet with the green aliens?  Likewise, I get just as upset when I see Chip and Dale, in Futureworld.  For the love of pete!  Can we really not have a Figment walkaround?!?!  (keep in mind that I love Chip and Dale, like family)

Why are we in Futureworld?  Not even in our space costumes!

Sidetracked: Little Train In Germany...

Today we are continuing in our exploration of "the little things" that make Walt Disney World so special.  We are taking a look at the beautiful, wonderful, splendid little train next to the Germany pavillion at Epcot.
I've been to Disney World many times, and I spend a good chunk of that time in World Showcase.  I might be running around gorging myself with sweet treats, or I might be princessing around the world.  Regardless, I am quite fidgety in nature and rarely do I find time to smell the proverbial roses.
I managed recently to "get sidetracked" by the little train in Germany, and shot the below video.  Funny how I never noticed how amazing it is.  Just another layer in the delicious onion of Disney World...

Go and have the most wonderful day ever!

Animation Appreciation: Lonesome Ghosts

To say that Lonesome Ghosts has a cult following would be somewhat of an understatement.  Released just days after Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs this short cartoon was kind of lost in the shuffle at the time.   1937 was a landmark year for Disney, not entirely on Snows shoulders either.  In addition to Lonesome Ghosts, we also see the release of Moose Hunters, and The Clock Cleaners.   It is easy to see how this cartoon would be somewhat ignored at the time.

Hey gang.

Saturday Quickie: Main Street Pumpkins.

My favorite thing?  Pumpkins on Main Street.  I love pumpkins, and have included proof in a video below.  Notice our ever present anniversary buttons?  Hey, we technically met in October...

Video I made in 2008.  Don't pay attention to my bad hair...

Animal Kingdom Artifact: 04

This wonderful quilt is one of the first things you encounter at Animal Kingdom Lodge, as it is situated directly behind the check in desk in the lobby at Jambo House.  I get inexplicably happy when I see this I know I'm in for a fun/relaxing vacation.

Coverland: Grim Grinning Ghosts.

For this Coverland post I've gathered some great videos of the Haunted Magic classic Grim Grinning Ghosts.    I have decidedly omitted my own bad omni-chord version of the song. Though, if you listen to Mousetalgia you might here it in the background of an old Halloween episode.

 The Dapper only they could.

Mini Doughnuts. Best Thing Ever.

Adam and I only recently discovered the Disney waterparks.  After years of, "oh, maybe we'll go next time."  We finally went.  Then we went again. Then again.
Its hard to imagine a Disney World trip without the waterparks now.  They are so charming and makes me wonder why they aren't MORE popular.   We each have our favorite park.  Adam likes Typhoon Lagoon...and I prefer Blizzard Beach.  Adam loves his Crush n' Gusher, and I can't live without Summit Plummet.  (best view in WDW, no kidding.)

Country Bear Tree...

What happens when you are totally obsessed with something Disney related?  If a movie comes out, most people buy the DVD and watch it endlessly.  If you have a favorite attraction, you ride it until you know every nook, cranny, and line in the spiel.   If you have a favorite character...what?  Maybe a tattoo?
Child's play my friend.  My favorite attraction is The Country Bear Jamboree and I make Country Bear Trees.   Enjoy.

Now I need a new art project. :(

Some Marie Love.

Anyone notice the influx of Marie merchandise in the parks lately?  Marie is the super adorable, sassy, brat of a kitten from the desperately underrated animated classic The Aristocats.  Truth be told, I understand why some fans dislike the movie.  First of all, it was the first fully post Walt animated movie and that is enough to bum ANYONE out.  It also draws heavily from the most successful animated movie ever, 101 Dalmations in both story and style.   Not to mention that this movie did in fact under perform at the box office, beginning a really dark age for the company.

Does this destroy my indie cred, or enhance it?

Two Pretty Birds.

Here are two terrific birds from the inside of Liberty Tree Tavern at the Magic Kingdom.

I love finding things like this at WDW.  I wish these birds were my friends.

Totally Obsessed with Annette.

In 1956 Buena Vista Records was the new kid on the block.  Sure the label had Disney branding and had already established itself a little with soundtracks, but was new to the teen pop genre.  By the time Annette Funicello's first album, Annette came out in 1959 the musical taste of kids was already moving away from sugar coated fluff.   With that said, Buena Vista Records went on to release some of the best teen records of the 60's.

Sunday Quickie: Andrew In Neverland.

Andrew In Neverland, May 2011.

As much as people complain about the queue for Peter Pans Flight, I have always had a strong appreciation for some of the artwork that appears as you wind closer to the attraction.   The trees are especially they are a direct reference to the terrific whimsical Mary Blair concept art.

Disney Blog Roundup: 10/02/11

Some of my favorite Disney posts this week:

   - Fantastic Muppet poster design from Design Work Life.

-Speaking of Muppets, Stelle over at This Happy Place continues her awesome Muppet Monday Series!

   - While yours truly did a guest spot for them as well! If I Can Make It There...

   - Really fun Vinylmation photos with their respective icons, via Main Street Gazette.

   - I might as well be a walking advertisement for Gorillas Don't Blog... these Adventureland photos from 1961 are super fantastic.
