Who the Heck is Clarice?

So I'm still totally obsessed with Instaparks, and every once in a while I stumble upon a late night post worthy of a second look.  Such is the case with this little beauty via Tokyo Disneyland...

Aghh!  Who the heck is that?!?!  When did Dale get a girlfriend?  This is genuinely freaking me out right now.
Turns out her name is Clarice...who has appeared in a few old Chip and Dale shorts, most notably Two Chips and A Miss from 1952.

Two Chips and A Miss, 1952.
What a hussy!  I'm not into this lady.

Princessing Around the World

The Disney Hipsters really like to challenge ourselves. One of the things we love to do together is set some stupid goal and complete it. We do this during our normal lives together and especially when we're in Disney World.

Always ready for a challenge. Clearly.

-15 hours and 55 Attractions in the Magic Kingdom in one day. Check.
-Watch all 50 Animated Classics 50 days in a row. Check.
-Ride Spaceship Earth at least once a day for a 10 day trip. Check.
-Eat around the world (one item from each pavilion). Check.

Animal Kingdom Artifact: 03

Animation Appreciation: The Band Concert.

I'm in the middle of reading The Illusion of Life, a truly tremendous and necessary book by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston.  One of the important aspects of the Disney cartoons of the 1930's is the drive and motivation of the characters actions.

Mickey Mouse in The Band Concert 1935.

Dress Up Your Tweedles.

Fun project this morning before work.

Agh!  All the stippling tickles!

Liberty Tree Awesomeness.

We have our favorite restaurants in Disney World, clearly.  We love food and though we come from a city dripping with amazing and diverse food,  we still love Disney food.  We tend to eat one sit down meal a day, usually an early dinner.
We have our favorite spots (Jiko, Artists Point, Sanaa) that we eat at every trip.  This past trip we decided to break from our norm and make a few adrs at new places for us.   One such place was Liberty Tree Tavern at the Magic Kingdom.

Art History: You Belong To My Heart.

Older Dinsey movies had a tendency to go a little...shall we say, wonky.   Driven by the monotony of animation, the company often included  surrealist segments to break up the repetition. The most famous being  Dumbo with its Pink Elephants on Parade and Winnie the Pooh with Heffalumps and Woozles.
My favorite Disney "bad acid trip" is You Belong To My Heart, from The Three Caballeros.   This segment features a beautiful song by Dora Luz and a technicolor melange of random wonderful images.   The images are brought on by Donald's love for Luz...apparently.

So know, like a flower.

Hipsters in the Park: Animal Kingdom / Lodge.

"Welcome home!"  No other words make me happier...especially because the place I am most likely to here them is at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge.
Every Disney World fan has their favorite resort.  Though I don't fully understand all of them, (Pop Century? Caribbean Beach? )  I often can find the charming aspects of each resort.  But the resort that I love most and have spent the most time at is Animal Kingdom Lodge.  Here is a little video tribute I made back in May...including some footage from Animal Kingdom park.  Enjoy.

I dream about the next time I get to walk into that amazing lobby, here the drums coming from Boma, and SMELL that wonderful AKL smell.  Heaven.

Saturday Quickie: Good Alice.

The wonderful photopass photographer snapped pictures while we were walking up to Alice for the second time that day.  This Alice was clearly well versed in her character and the movie that she comes from.  She even sang "How Do You Do, and Shake Hands" with us.  Just wonderful.

Disney Blog Roundup: 9/24/11

Do Not Anger The Adventureland Tiki Gods...

I clearly have too much time on my hands these days.  Here is the first episode of Do Not Anger... a new show staring the Adventureland Tiki Gods.  Enjoy.

Gran Fiesta Tour + Me = True Love.

I think I've made it pretty clear how much I love Gran Fiesta Tour.  This is usually the second attraction we go on after getting to Disney World...right after Spaceship Earth and has been on occasion the last attraction of our trip.
A simple boat ride, bright colors, recognizable (and classic!!!!) characters, and a snappy song.  I'll take it.   The history of The Three Caballeros  is for another blog post down the way.  In the mean time enjoy this ride through I put together featuring the amazing Andrew's Sisters version of the song.   :)

Also, since things seem to be picking up steam here a little bit.  If you like our videos please subscribe via youtube, follow us on twitter @disneyhipsters, and drop us a line if you have any comments, suggestions, or questions.

Andrews Sisters Love.

I'm a pretty big Andrews Sisters fan. I tend to enjoy bad ass women from the 40's in general...but these girls really knock it out of the park. As the leading female act of the time, it made sense that they would collaborate with the Disney company.

I wish these were my aunties.

They have several wonderful Disney connections, most notably the 1948 short Little Toot which is from the long player Melody Time.

Animal Kingdom Artifact: #2

This wonderful flag is my single favorite piece of artwork in the main Jambo house building.  Located as you are leaving the main building, in the little portico.  Check it out next time you are headed to the Mara or the pool!  Better yet, grab a drink at Victoria Falls and enjoy it in the portico.

Oh god.  Now I'm sad again.  I just left AKL and I need to go back. :(

Renegade Gardening: Disney World.

We have about 40 houseplants at Disney Hipster headquarters, much to Adam's dismay.  I am clearly the plant lover.  My house plants occupy a large amount of my "hobby reservoir," along with Disney and art history.

A few plants from my menagerie.

I have found many ways to combine my love of plants AND my love of Disney World.  There are obvious opportunities like the Flower and Garden Festival at Epcot each spring.  At the festival there are several booths throughout world showcase that sell interesting and fun plants.

Totally Obsessed with Instaparks.

Henry Work of Touring Plans and Betamouse fame has started a really fabulous and interesting website.  Instapark groups together photos taken within the area of Disney parks around the world, via the Instagram photo app.
All five Disney park resorts are represented...though Tokyo clearly wins in the "most stinking adorable" group.  Because the pictures are not limited to just park boundaries you often get great shots from Disney hotels as well.

From Tokyo Disneyland....SO AWESOME.

Side Tracked: Cinderella's Wishing Well.

As far as I know, Cinderella did not have a wishing well in the 1950 animated classic.  At least not to the same extent as Snow White did.  But who knows, the prince probably had one waiting for her at the castle, so we will assume that is the story.
Regardless of any over sight we do have this wonderful wishing well in the Magic Kingdom.  Carved by Disney sculptor extraordinaire Blaine Gibson, the well sits quiet and alone in front and to the right of the castle.

Animal Kingdom Artifacts: 01

Hey. We are fresh from another lengthy stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge.  (AKL has just surpassed Old Key West as the resort I've stayed at the most!)  One of the things we love most about AKL, besides the extensive theming,  is the amazing artwork.   We have collected hundreds of photos of artwork from the lodge and will be featuring it here weekly.  Enjoy.

These two pieces are featured at the restrooms in the lobby of Jambo house.  I love the idea of having the male mask outside of the mens room, and female mask outside of the ladies room.  Another great addition to the canon of great Disney bathroom signage.

A Smile Means Friendship to Everyone...

It's a Small World has an awfully bad reputation.  It is the first thing non-Disney folks make fun of, not to mention that a lot of park savvy people don't even ride this attraction. I think it is due to the overtly positive message and association with toddlers.

Don't get me wrong.  I'm an intrinsically negative person, as most 20 somethings are. But reading the lyric "a smile means friendship to everyone," really gets me.  What a beautiful song.
Here is my hipstered out version:

Animation Appreciation: Plane Crazy.

While reading up on miss Clarabelle Cow, I had the pleasure of watching Plane Crazy in it's entirity via Youtube.  Though I really love and appreciate the original Disney cartoons of the late 20's and 30's I rarely find time to watch them.  Every once in a while I find pure aesthetic bliss in a gag...and this is one of them:

This is great for a few reasons.  First of all, the turkeys tail just snaps right off.  Secondly, I'm pretty sure that turkeys aren't the best at flying.   It would make more sense to use a condor tail or something.  They are in California after all.

And just for good measure...the original 1928 cartoon.  For the few of you that don't know this is the first Mickey Mouse cartoon.  It also features Minnie Mouse and an early version of Clarabelle Cow, while most of the others didn't show up for a few years. Another great gag features Mickey ruffling his hair to look more like Charles Lindbergh.  This is really swell.

Take six minutes out of your day for this.

Magic Kingdom Video....

So it took me nearly 24 hours to organize and tag over 1,000 photos and videos from our trip.  You would think I'd be too exhausted to edit together a video for our blog.  You, my friend, would be quite wrong.
Here you have Magic Kingdom 2.0, featuring a few cameos from my (andrew's) dad.   Enjoy.

   Haha.  Lots more to come.

Clarabelle Cow Love.

Clarabelle Cow has been on my radar a lot lately.  Last year Adam was obsessively playing Epic Mickey on wii.  Clarabelle makes several cameos, playing into the whole forgotten characters angle of that game.  She also makes a wonderful appearance in the Frontierland Hoedown.

Clarabelle and myself, right before the hoedown.

It saddens me greatly to think of Clarabelle as a forgotten  character.  I prefer to think of her more as an underused  character.  Looking back on her vast body of work Clarabelle is hardly just a supporting background character.  Like most Disney/Iwerks characters she has a surprising amount of depth. The love triangle with Goofy and Horace Horsecollar is of particular interest.

Clarabelle's awesome moves at 2:45.

Above all else, Clarabelle is as old as Mickey Mouse himself.  If we, the Disney community, aren't here to help preserve the past then what are we doing?  With that said, I think Clarabelle would be a perfect fit for the DCA reboot. Why focus on Goofy's Flight School, when we could include the silent characters from the 30's?  Include a meet and greet in that area of the park! Or a scheduled meet and greet in Frontierland for that we always need pioneer Donald?!

A little bit of love at Hollywood Studios.
I'm pretty sure that Clarabelle is due for a major visibility comeback.  Recently while watching the Frontierland Hoedown it was obvious that most people recognized her.  The fact of the matter is that her she is omnipresent in the Disney universe despite the fact that she is so underused.  The beautiful sharp  lines of her design are classic Ub Iwerks.
   Keep on truckin Clarabelle.

Hipsters in the Park: Epcot.

We are fresh off the plane, back in beautiful Montclair, NJ.  We had an absolutely amazing/magical/food-filled trip to Walt Disney World.  I am really excited to get back to business with the blog...we gathered over 1,000 photos and videos to edit together!  I'm going to spend the next few days organizing those.  In the mean time, please enjoy this video from our trip in May.

The countdown starts towards our next trip.  A mere seven weeks away!  Not nearly as long of a trip this time, as we are going for  business.  (but hey, we get to stay at the Contemporary for I'm not complaining.)

In Love With Dorothy McGuire.

My mother taught me and my siblings well.  All four of us know the lyrics to The Ugly Bug Ball, we all have our favorite scene from Pete's Dragon, and we could probably recite every witty exchange in Bedknobs and Broomsticks.   My family grew up on OLD Disney movies.  Yes, as a 27 year old I did go and see every new Disney animated film in the 90's...but I lived for the older live action Disney movies.
The cannon of Disney films are composed the quintessential awesome family.  The quirky dad, Fred McMurray.  The dorky older brother, Tommy Kirk. (sigh.)  The cute little brother, Kervin Corcoran.  The smarty pants/ talkative / sweet sister, Hayley Mills.  Then there is Dorothy McGuire...the perfect Disney mother.

Just perfect.

Dorothy McGuire represents everything that I love in an old movie.  She's a stunning and stoic beauty, has an underrated amazing voice, and was effortlessly convincing as an actress.   She wasn't in as many Disney films as the others from the quintessential Disney family...but she is just as important.   I see her on the screen and I just melt.

Disney Blog Roundup: 9/3/11

By the time this blog round up goes online....I'll be in Disney World!  Yay!  Eight nights at Animal Kingdom Lodge, with lots and lots of research planned, including a million ADRs.

Here are some of my favorite blog posts from the last week:

Downtown Disney Would Be So Lucky: Over at Imagineering Disney they take a stab at explaining the shortcomings of out of park entertainment.

Pretzels Und Bier:  Fabulous look at some beer and pretzel related merch at the Germany pavilion, via Eating (and Drinking) Around the World.

Folks at Disneyland, March 1968: One of the more funny blogs of the weeks comes to us from Gorillas Dont Blog.

Epcot's Norway Film Replacement Still In Negotiations:  I, for one, would be very upset if this ever changed.

Fun Drink Idea: Epcot Shandy.

A shandy is essentially half beer and half citrus soda. You can read more about it on Wikipedia.
I, Andrew, am a beer drinker. Yes, I understand that this is bastardized beer....but it its very, very refreshing.  If there is one thing that the hot sun over Epcot requires it is a refreshing beverage.  The only thing more offensive to a beer drinker than mixing beer with citrus soda?  Warm beer.
I suggest grabbing a drink at any number of drink carts:
      -Over by Test Track
      -The UK pavilion
      -The Mexico Pavilion

Look for this magical sign to complete your drink.

Sipping it slowly as you wander around future world...and then, just as your beer has dipped below the halfway mark, hit up Club Cool.  Fill your cup with either KINLEY of KREST and enjoy your new beer cocktail.
Once you leave Club Cool you will get many jealous looks from overheated dads...."golly!  Where did that guy get that shandy?!"  If he happens to ask, tell him its an EO Shandy (if you use Krest) or a Fountain of Nations Shandy (if you use Kinley).   Pay it forward friends.
Drink options at Club Cool.

Summer Magic On Mainstreet.

I love Summer Magic.  I love Hayley Mills. (like with a creepy/weird passion.)  A few years ago I rediscovered this film after not seeing it for a long while mom insisted that I used to love it when I was a kid.  Anyway, I spent the majority of the summer of 2009 watching this movie on repeat.  Pure brilliance.   Small town / turn of the century is one of the tropes of classic Disney.

Summer Magic has hardly any representation in the parks. The Emporium has a loose theme based around Burl Ives character Osh Popham.  There are also three songs from the film represented in the background music loop, including an amazing rendition of the title track. personal theme song.

Beautiful Beulah.  Hayley kills this one, in a good way.

There is inexplicably no video on youtube of Dorothy McGuire singing Summer Magic....though I am working on something to remedy that problem soon.
I think these songs scream Mainstreet U.S.A.  They are bouncy and sort of ragtime feeling...and are some of the Sherman Brothers most under rated songs.  Beautiful Beulah is especially perfect.
Do you recognize these songs from main street?

The Magical Sprinkle-less Disney World

I'm a huge fan of soft serve; therefore you would assume in visiting Disney Parks on an average of 3 x's per year I would ingest tons of Disney branded frozen confections. You would be assuming wrong.

The reason......virtually no Sprinkles in Disney Parks.

I love Sprinkles (Jimmies if you're that kind of person...hmph).

There's something about those barley flavored ultra hydrogenated sticks of wax that makes ice cream worth eating. During my first visits to Disney World, I was horrified each and every time I was denied sprinkles. I've looked everywhere. They do turn up at a few controlled sit down environments, buy none are offered at any quick service that I've ever found. After alot of thought, the only good reason I see for this "Sprinkle Ban" is for sprinkle control.

Lets be honest.

Soft serve + Kids + Florida heat = Mess

Soft Serve + Kids + Florida Heat + Sprinkles = A Small Disaster

I do understand the mess issue, but they could easy use those only slightly toxic plastic drip catchers. (See below). Aside from they the only explanation is that they are too cheap or lazy.

At the end of the day, I don't buy any of these excuses that I am imagining Disney would give. )I should probably just ask them.) Sprinkles would make my in Park experiences that much more Magical! Come on Disney, make it happen.

I've included a list of all the in park locations that have soft serve and DO NOT have sprinkles. (For all you sick people that like topping free ice cream) Leave us a comment if you know any that do or have any ideas to remedy this atrocity. I've been thinking about smuggling in a jar for myself. In fact, lets have a Disney Hipster Smuggled Sprinkle meet up next week!

Magic Kingdom:

Aloha Isle
Auntie Gravity's Galactic Goodies
Storybook Treats
Sunshine Tree Terrace

Animal Kingdom:

Anandapur Ice Cream Truck
Camp Soft Serve

Hollywood Studios:

Dinosaur Gertie's Ice Cream
Oasis Canteen

Hollywood Scoops
KRNR Station

Africa Coolpost (its totally NOT cool)
Fife and Drum Tavern (lame)

Extracurricular Activities: Gowalla.

We are in Disney, this very second.   In lieu of taking the week off, I prepared a few blog posts ahead of time.  This got me to thinking...what are we going to do different this trip?  Sure there is Star Tours 2, Tiki Birds, and meeting Phieas and Ferb (don't judge!)...but what extra curricular activities are we going to partake in?
One of my favorites is Gowalla, a "check in" style app.  Gowalla is super easy to figure out and is a lot of fun to check in on your favorite attractions, restaurants, and shops.   Disney has partnered with Gowalla and created icons for almost every ride in the park.  You can also complete "trips" specific to Disney World!  For instance, you can earn the World Traveler pin for checking in at every pavilion at Epcot's world showcase.
Make sense? no?  Here are some screen shots:

Here are my "trips" from our last WDW vacation!

In addition to checking may find Disney related items, or trade your existing items for them!

I love that you can take a picture to attach to your location...lots of fun to look back at your vacation.

This is only my second WDW trip using Gowalla and I am really excited to get more pins, finish more trips, and take some photos.  Plus, I have a million hitchhiking ghosts to get rid of...

Hipsters in the Park: Typhoon Lagoon / Mini Golf.

Here is another video from our Hipsters in the Park series.  I made these after our last trip in May of 2011.   This was our first trip visiting the waters parks...and boy did we have fun!  On your next trip to either water park PROMISE ME that you will get mini doughnuts with chocolate sauce.  Dear lord they were delicious.
Mini golf was also a total hoot.  Added bonus, you get 50% off the price of mini golf with your annual pass!  Enjoy.

Please don't hold me accountable for Stitch...but he
was dumping water on people! It was kind of awesome.
